KINETICA™ 3 to Premiere in Los Angeles, AUG 17th
When: Friday, August 17, 2001, 7:00pm
Where: The Norris Cinema Theater on the campus of the
University of Southern California, LA
Admission: $8.
There are two programs in this third edition in the
KINETICA™ series:
Hy Hirsh and the Fifties:
Jazz and Abstraction in Beat Era Film
Newly-preserved prints of the rarely seen films
of Hy Hirsh are featured in this look at abstraction
in the ’50s. The program also includes films by
Hirsh’s contemporaries including Jordan Belson,
Harry Smith, Patricia Marx and also John and James
Whitney and Mary Ellen Bute.
Abstract Expressionism, Jazz, Zen and Beat culture —
all come together in these abstract films of the ’50s.
Jordan Belson’s “Bardo” and the Contemporary Program
In the contemporary program of KINETICA™ 3, more
recent ‘visual music’ animation will be screened — both
computer-animated and otherwise, on film and on video,
from the 70s up to the present. This program features the
world premiere of “Bardo,” a new work by Jordan Belson,
and also includes work by Sky David, Joost Rekveld,
Richard Reeves, Ying Tan, Paul Glabicki, Bob Snyder,
and Chris Casady as well as other contemporary artists.
For the benefit of those who will be in LA for the
SIGGRAPH conference, we are showing both programs
in one evening (beginning with the contemporary program).
Also, USC’s Norris Theater is located just 2 blocks from the
Shrine Auditorium, the site of Siggraph’s Electronic Theater.
After the screening, cocktails will be served courtesy of
ABSOLUT Vodka.

the works shown, visit

The Norris theater is much smaller than LACMA’s Bing Theater
where K2 was shown last year. It is *strongly* suggested
that you get your tickets *early* (i.e., right now).
Don’t be disappointed!

$5000. from the National Endowment for The Humanities
for “Development of a long-term plan for preserving
paper-based collections, photographs, moving image
collections, and material culture objects documenting
20th-century art.”
This will allow us to assess the preservation needs for
our entire collection which will hopefully lead to more
funding for this project in the future.
