Michael Scroggins

“Michael Scroggins is a pioneer in the field of performance animation. The utilization of realtime visual instruments in the creation of visual compositions of absolute color, shape, and texture has been at the heart of his work for over 25 years. His absolute animation works have been widely exhibited internationally including screenings at the Centre George Pompidou, Paris; Union of Filmmakers, Moscow; Seibu Ginza, Tokyo; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles. Noel Palazzo

Born in Buenos Aires , Noel currently lives and works in Barcelona. She recieved her BA in Image and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires, where she also lectured in Arts Sociology and Analytical History of the Media in Argentina and Latin America.Her most recent project is Punto y Raya Festival. In October 2008, she was appointed a member of the iotaCenter Advisory Council.–www.mad-actions.com

Eugene Epstein

Eugene Epstein

Eugene Epstein a scholar and collector of Lumia art. His interest in Thomas Wilfred’s work began in the early 1960s, while studying astronomy as a graduate student at Harvard University. Epstein encountered a Wilfred Lumia piece at the Museum of Modern Art. Obtaining, his first Lumia piece in 1965 from Thomas Wilfred himself, Epstein has been a collector and authority of Wilfred’s work ever since.For more information about Epstein and his work, please visit his website.  Epstein will be giving a special presentation on Thomas Wilfred Friday, Nov. 5th, during LVP 2010.

Larry Cuba“Larry Cuba works in the tradition known as ‘abstract animation,’ ‘absolute’ or ‘concrete.’ His works are characterized by cascade designs, dramatic changes in perspective and a precise mathematical structure. Cuba attended the University of Washington and Cal Arts, where he earned his Masters in Animation. Cuba was also an artist in residence at the Institute for Visual Media at the ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany.”— Gene YoungbloodLarry Cuba is currently on tour with the Punto Raya Festival presenting a retrospective of his work along side other abstract classics. MAD-Actions and the iotaCenter present the 2010 US tour of THE BEST OF PUNTO Y RAYA and RETROSPECTIVE: LARRY CUBA AND OTHER ABSTRACT CLASSICS

The festival “explores the ultimate synthesis of the form·movement duality in different spheres of human endeavor” and “uses abstraction’s prime matter to reveal the limitations and achievements of our representation systems.”

The CrankVisit “The Crank Blog!” With free screenings of rare films, UCLA’s James Bridges Theater is the place to be on Thursdays at 5pm. Hosted by “The Crank,” a Cinema Studies based graduate student organization; the screenings draw from the UCLA Film and Televisions Archive’s rich collection. The first screening is September 30, Urson’s 1927 Chicago, featuring live accompaniment by Michael Mortilla.

 

Artist of the Week
Jonas MekasJonas Mekas was born in Lithuania in 1922 and, came to the United States after being imprisoned by the Nazis in a forced labor camp. In 1954 he became the editor in chief of the Film Culture Magazine, and four years later he began his pioneering ‘Movie Journal’ column in the Village Voice. In 1962 and 1964 he also founded the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Film-Makers’ Cinematheque. These eventually evolved into the Anthology Film Archives, one of the world’s largest archives of avant-garde cinema. Jim EllisJim Ellis studied at CalArts and has gone on to create vivid personal and commercial animation, including real-time concert animation for the rock band Rush. His other work involves creating effects sequences based on the subject of synesthesia, as well as developing shorts and feature of his own music and animation.
