Aarhus Gallery – Walter Ungerer

This compilation of four works by filmmaker and artist Walter Ungerer was created for an exhibition at the Aarhus Gallery in Belfast, Maine.

Monarda (2010)
“Monarda” (also called “Bee Balm”) is an exploration through digital manipulation of clips recorded in Ungerer’s garden of various plants, flowers, and birds. Abstract colors, shapes, and sounds are the key components of the film.

Blue Parrot (2009)
“Blue Parrot” follows a journey through Los Angeles sites, including the Getty Museum and the Santa Monica Beach, which is based on short vignettes recorded with a small digital camera during a visit to LA from Maine.

Such As It Is (2007)
“Such As It Is” is a film in four parts: underground, city, rural countryside, and fog and ocean. All four parts portray experiments with color and sound.

A Warm Day Comes After A Cold Winter (1994)
This short film is an example of Ungerer’s early work with computer and animation software. The film focuses on an eye that floats in the frame with abstract shapes and colors.

Walter Ungerer began working in the underground film scene of New York City in the early 1960s. In the 90s, Ungerer moved to video to continue his exploration of light, space and technology. Recently, Ungerer has used inexpensive digital still cameras to create his works.
